Growing The Business

First hand view

This week we won the maintenance contracts for a major hotel chain throughout the UK. Due to this we have had a first-hand view at the effect the pandemic and the restrictions that accompany daily life have had on the hospitality industry.

Properties have been repurposed to help with better handling those who need treatment and others have been outfitted with measures related to both hygiene and the way a business operates to better reduce the spread of Covid-19 whilst aspects of pre lockdown life can still be pursued.

Once the going got tough the Government opened new temporary hospitals, like the Nightingale Hospitals, as well as repurposing leisure buildings in order to cope with the increasing number of patients. The task of constructing and repurposing buildings was enormous and had to be conducted under strict hygiene standards as well as ever increasing time constraints due to the rising demand for additional hospitals and test centres.

As the possibility of a second wave looms and local and national restrictions intensify the true toll on the hospitality industry is only just being revealed. By the end of the year the chief executive of UK Hospitality has said ‘the anticipated number of additional redundancies by the end of the year was 560,000’. This is now estimated to be much higher due to local restrictions. Therefore, Nationwide Lifts & Escalators Ltd is on standby to help affected industries in all lift related areas such as lift maintenance, lift repairs and lift modernisation with a first hand view

When travelling in a lift remember to practice social distancing as much as possible and try to avoid crowding in the lifts. Also avoid touching the buttons with your hands themselves. Spreading will also be reduced by regular cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces.

At Nationwide Lifts & Escalators Ltd we do not see ourselves as the normal run of the mill lift contractor.  Through our dedicated customer care, we see ourselves as your partner throughout the entire lifespan of your lift equipment. We are in this together, every step of the way.

A great excuse to open conversations

A great excuse to open conversations

The clocks going back is a great excuse to open conversations around wellbeing and mental health. Use this opportunity to talk to your teams about their mental health challenges  during the winter months – even if they’ve coped well with the challenges of home working and limited human contact so far, they may notice a marked difference as we approach winter

In the early hours of Sunday 25 October at 2am, the UK will revert to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) by going back one hour, marking the official end of British Summer Time. And a new era of post-pandemic partial lockdown in Greenwich Mean Time begins.

For most this change may seem insignificant but for some , this has a big impact on their productivity and energy levels  – upsetting someone’s routine by just an hour can affect their circadian rhythm significantly with the clocks going back .

“Circadian rhythms are physical, mental, and behavioural changes that follow a daily cycle. They respond primarily to light and darkness in an organism’s environment. Sleeping at night and being awake during the day is an example of a light-related circadian rhythm.”

At the start of the pandemic it took some time for people to adjust to a life of home working – but things were very different back then, with opportunities to enjoy warm weather and sunlight streaming through our windows. Whilst parts of the country aren’t in as strict lockdown, the 10pm curfew and continued restrictions to leisure activities such as Football and music concerts means that mood-boosting options are somewhat limited. Without these distractions, changes to light levels, and the natural routine and attitude it sets in motion, could cause harsher mental health challenges. One phone call to check in with your homeworking staff can make all the difference, and is a great excuse to open conversations, there is light at the end of the tunnel but we have a few darker months to get through together.

At Nationwide Lifts & Escalators Ltd. we don’t just see ourselves as the normal run of the mill lift contractor.
Through our dedicated customer care we see ourselves as your partner throughout the entire life span of your lift equipment.

We also offer traditional lift maintenance, repair works and modernisation to all types of passenger & goods lifts and access products nationwide. With our highly skilled in house engineers we can ensure that our traditional lift maintenance helps cut down on call-outs, down time and costs. We also have a first time fix policy for lift repairs where our aim is to ensure we find the cause of the breakdown and repair it first time with no repeat visits.

Veterans in Crisis is a Community Interest Company.[1] It was established in 2018 by Ger Fowler, a veteran of the First Battalion, Light Infantry. His experiences in Northern Ireland left him with post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic back pain and depression. He became addicted to the drugs he was prescribed to help the pain.

‘A key driver of my recovery was a passion to help other veterans in my home city. I founded Veterans in Crisis (Sunderland) in January 2018 so that I could help veterans who suffer like I did.  My mission is simple: to help veterans to help veterans. I know how veterans feel and what they are going through, because I have been there myself.’

The veterans VIC supports must be from Sunderland. They may be homeless, unemployed, addicted to drugs or alcohol or have mental health needs; VIC’s role is to help them to stabilise their lives and we work with them to build a new future.

VICS has more than 300 members and is growing rapidly.

VICS has won four awards during this year:

  • Health Service Journal Military and Civilian Health Partnership Award
  • Sunderland Echo Special Community Award
  • Newcastle Evening Chronicle Armed Forces Champion Award
  • Springboard North East Supporting Partner of The Year

Our Sunderland heritage

At Nationwide Lifts we are proud of our Sunderland heritage a hub of industry with great tradition and roots and bring that tradition to the way we work, Honesty, reliability and a lot of other ility’s

Sunderland is situated at the mouth of the River Wear and dates back to 1179, when a small fishing village was granted a charter. Over the centuries, Sunderland grew as a port, trading coal and salt and was once famously hailed as the “Largest Shipbuilding Town in the World”. Ships were built on the Wear from at least 1346 onwards and by the mid-eighteenth century Sunderland was one of the chief shipbuilding towns in the country. Now it relies on the car making industry and other business to support the town’s economy.

The name Sunderland was used from the 17th century. The name probably derived from ‘land’ which was ‘sundered’ or separated from the monastery at Monkwearmouth. Gateshead: The Venerable Bede described the place in Saxon times as ‘Goat’s Head’

Home of the Mighty Sunderland AFC Saturday afternoons up here are taken very seriously

Sunderland’s alternative name of the Black Cats is one which is known up and down the country, but it has only been the club’s official nickname since 1997.

The legend of Joshua Dunn, who volunteered for Sunderland Loyal Volunteer force, fleeing from the ‘sound of a black cat’, led to one of the gun batteries on the river Wear (John Paul Jones Battery) become known as the Black Cat Battery.

That name then became associated with the newly-formed football club and upon adopting red-and-white stripes as their strip, the first Sunderland badge featured a black cat, along with a ship, a football and party of the city’s coat of arms.

We are proud of Our Sunderland heritage and roll out our tradition past to all our works

Passenger and Platform Lifts

Passenger and Platform lifts

After a recent win for Nationwide Lifts for a National Care home chain we thought we put together a few tips on staying safe in Passenger and Platform lifts during these uncertain times .

Passenger and Platform lifts are small enclosed spaces where people must stand very close together. They are also an essential mode of transport for people who cannot use the stairs easily, especially in critical settings like Nursing Homes. We have put together tips for lift use whilst social distancing because of the recent Covid 19 pandemic

While many of us in the UK are currently facing fresh movement restrictions, there are Buildings that that need to stay operational. For example, hospitals and care homes  where people and supplies must always be able to move efficiently within and between floors,

By following the tips below, you can help stop the spread of the Virus in your Building and place of work

  1. Regular cleaning of touchable lift surfaces

It is always good practice to keep surfaces cleaned regularly. We would recommend extra cleaning efforts so that handrails, lift walls and Buttons are disinfected regularly.

  1. Avoid direct contact with landing and lift car buttons To avoid the spread of Covid 19 from landing and lift push buttons, it is practice not to touch with your bare fingers, instead use  a gloved finger, or something else such as a pen If you need to use your bare hands, remember to wash them with an alcohol-based hand sanitiser
  1. For passenger carrying lifts practice social distancing and avoid crowds

If you cannot maintain a two-metre distance with other people in the lift then be patient and wait for the next one or consider taking the stairs instead if you can. Ideally, it is best to travel in the lift /elevator cabin on your own or people from you own household to avoid spread.

Nationwide Lifts & Escalators Ltd provide traditional lift maintenance across the UK. We can offer preventative planned packages for all types of passenger lifts, goods lifts, platform lifts, dumbwaiters, stairlifts and all types of access products. With over 50 years of experience, we have serviced and maintained all types of lift equipment Nationwide.

We offer traditional lift maintenance that allows our experienced lift engineers more time to look after your lifts on site. By offering the right lift service, our engineers can help cut down on call-outs, breakdowns and costs. By spending more time on an individual lift it allows our engineers to prevent issues happening in the future. We do not believe in giving our engineers huge rounds to complete each day as this can cut back on quality and time on site.

We can tailor lift maintenance to suit clients requirements. We can offer standard contracts or comprehensive solutions for your lift servicing. We always take into consideration the type of equipment, usage, age and clients budgets before we agree the best way forward for your lift maintenance solution.

Please contact if we can help further on head.office@nationwide-lifts.com or call us on FREEPHONE 0800 599 9177. We can offer all types of lift service and maintenance work throughout England, Wales and Scotland.

Property Management

Property Management

The business of Property Management never stopped and occupies a central place in the heart of the Crisis, ensuring the day to day and financial management of buildings in this period open or not.

Soon followed a series of businesses coming to a full standstill and doors where shut some permanently, and others having to rely on homeworking and furloughs to survive the uncertain times.

The first announcement for a country wide lockdown in Europe came on 9th March in Italy. Other countries soon followed, with Spain, France, Belgium and the UK being amongst many to ask people to stay indoors.

Faced with an unprecedented situation, Property Management had to react quickly in order to ensure work was able to continue and so have we at Nationwide Lifts taking into account the nature of the business  bringing in measures to protect our customers and staff and the most vulnerable in the community such as the Care Environment.

We work to Liaise with people on site and work alongside the property teams to ensure vital servicing and repairs are carried out while working within Government Guidelines

Lifts will always need servicing and lifts will always need repairs and we will continue to work with all our customers to provide a Safe service to the highest Standards .

We appreciate times are tough and the priority is to stay well which is our priority as well but if contracts are coming up for renewal, we can make great cost saving which at these unprecedented times can make a big impact on your bottom line.

Modernisation

Modernisation.

An old lift does not necessarily need replacing in its entirety, in fact, doing so may be extremely difficult due to the design or layout of the existing lift installation and the Building . Instead, you can have a Lift Modernisation . What does this involve ?

Lifts which are properly serviced and maintained can last years and tend to have a longer life cycle than most if not all other forms of transportation. it’s not uncommon to be servicing existing passenger lifts that are over 25 years old.

However, like any electrical and mechanical equipment, a lift eventually needs to be replaced or thoroughly updated. It may be more difficult to find spare parts for an old lift, so it may be out of order for a longer time causing issues and delays on your site.

In the case of an existing lift installation it should not be assumed that the equipment complies with all current regulations and/or standards. This is particularly unlikely in the event of equipment that is over ten years of age.

Nationwide Lifts & Escalators Ltd also offer complete lift modernisation packages. We can offer lift controller replacements, lift interior upgrades, hydraulic replacements, door upgrades or replacement lift doors.

We also offer the complete turn key solution for our clients by offering builders-work and electrical work as part of our package. So when you are not wanting the upheaval of a full lift replacement, a lift modernisation solution from us is a good idea. We can often get your lift fully modernised with a new interior and all components within 2 weeks.

We only supply and fit open protocol parts to any lift repairs or modernisations. This gives the client flexibility on their lifts but also peace of mind on future works.

We believe by having the right company and right engineers as your service provider, then you can cut down on call-outs, downtime and ultimately cost.

Contact us if we can help at all for any lift repair work or Lift Modernisation work. You can get in touch by emailing us at head.office@nationwide-lifts.com or FREEPHONE 0800 599 9177

With some excellent reference sites and reference customers in the UK, we have grown our business via repeat work and word of mouth from these customers.

Nationwide Lifts & Escalators Ltd can also do LOLER inspections for clients throughout the UK

The Lifting Equipment and Lifting Operations Regulations (often abbreviated to LOLER) place duties on people and companies who own, operate or have control over lifting equipment. This includes all businesses and organisations whose employees use lifting equipment, whether owned by them or not. In most cases, lifting equipment is also work equipment so the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) will also apply hence why it’s imperative to have a maintenance agreement in place with Nationwide Lifts & Escalators Ltd.

All lifting operations involving lifting equipment must be properly planned by a competent person, appropriately supervised and carried out in a safe manner.

LOLER also requires that all equipment used for lifting is fit for purpose, appropriate for the task, suitably marked and, in many cases, subject to statutory periodic thorough examination. Records must be kept of all thorough examinations and any defects found must be reported to both the person responsible for the equipment and the relevant enforcing authority.

Please contact us if we can help you with your Lift contracts in Cumbria or on head.office@nationwide-lifts.com or call us on FREEPHONE 0800 599 9177.
